In this project we were asked to design a “translation machine”. We needed to develop some sort of process to convert a form of input into a form of output.
As input, I used clusters of shedded hair that I began collecting from my comb every day.
I then made prints emphasizing the negative space around the hair, creating small, abstract images.
I would gaze at each print it until I found a shape or form within it that led me to a distant memory I’d long forgotten. I would write this down next to the print.
I translated shedded hair into regained memories.
I wanted to engage with the dynamic of losing and gaining something. Everyday I am loosing hair but I am simultaneously growing more hair. Likewise I am constantly loosing memories while simultaneously making new ones. With this work I interfered with the cycle some, and preserved my dead hair by giving it a new purpose, and resurfaced old memories which would have otherwise faded away.
