She Loved Her

For this project we were prompted to think of a question that we wanted to answer through a 500 page book.

I landed on the question:

How does sapphic love change through the passage of time?

I Answered this question through two lenses, one where the passage of time refers to different time periods of humanity, using the settings of both an ancient past and a dystopian future. The second lens being where the passage of time refers to different periods of a relationship, the unsure excitement in the beginning, and the trust and experience that comes as it ages.

I divided the book into two parts to convey a story though these lenses. The first half tells the story of two women in ancient Rome falling in love with each other. I used symbolism of blooming flowers indicating youth and new beginnings, along with images of stone statues of women and latin phrases to build this setting and ambiguously represent the characters. This section is very exploratory and has a very excited, yet nervous tone as the characters come to terms with their sexualities and fall for each other. This calls for less portrayal of the world outside of the characters, embodying the feeling of life solely evolving around the person one is falling for

Halfway through, the book transitions into this second part. This change is very subtle at first, but becomes more apparent to the reader as it continues. This phase of the story is set in the far future where two women rely one each other to navigate the wasteland the world has become. They are far into their relationship and carry a deep sense of loyalty and trust for each other.I used images of decaying flowers are used to symbolize aging and time passing, along with vaguely identifiable photos of my girlfriend and I to represent the characters, hinting towards a newer time period and sense of familiarity. This section focuses more on the world surrounding the characters, emphasizing the experience of being in a relationship while dealing with the difficult realities of life. The two women acknowledge their long history together, and deep care they have, accepting each other’s eternal love. This concludes the story on a thoughtful note where the reader doesn’t know what will happen to these women in this wasteland, but knows they will be together.
